$2.1 Million Grant Will Fund Brain Injury Research

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services named JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute one of just 16 Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) sites in the nation, a designation that includes a $2.1 million grant to conduct brain injury research over five years. Patients at Model Systems sites can participate in cutting-edge research projects and benefit from a higher level of resources.

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., Chairman of the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force, said he works to ensure funding of the program because he understands the need for continued research to help people with traumatic brain injuries.

The Center for Brain Injuries at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute is recognized nationally and internationally as a pioneer in brain trauma evaluation and treatment. Through a comprehensive continuum of care, from acute inpatient rehabilitation, subacute extended recovery, to outpatient rehabilitation, the Center for Brain Injuries restores real-life skills to those with brain injuries, enabling a return to a healthier and more satisfying lifestyle with families, friends and communities.

The center is one of the only brain injury programs in the nation that meets the needs of all levels of brain injury recovery. A multidisciplinary and highly collaborative team provides the most effective, state-of-the-art treatment options in three comprehensive and innovative care settings:

• The Brain Trauma Unit is the acute inpatient rehabilitation component of the Center for Brain Injuries. The program is accredited by The Joint Commission and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
• The Extended Recovery Unit is a specialized subacute setting designed to treat patients who have improved medically yet continue to require a high level of customized rehabilitative care.
• The Outpatient Cognitive Rehabilitation Program provides specialized services for outpatient treatment of individuals who have sustained traumatic brain injuries or other acquired neurological injuries, such as stroke or anoxia. The program offers a variety of specialized services, including in-depth neuropsychological evaluations, integrative team-based care, cognitive rehabilitation therapy programming and tailored individualized therapies through our clinic.
