Cryoablation
Do you suffer from heavy periods (called “menorrhagia”)? Do heavy periods get in the way of your daily activities? Did you know there is a new, safe, effective in office procedure to lighten and in some cases eliminate heavy periods?
Our practice now offers our patients an alternative to hysterectomy called endometrial Cryoablation. The procedure is a 10-15 minute procedure performed under local anesthetic within the comfort of our office. Most patients can leave the office within 1 hour and experience little to no pain after the procedure.
How the Procedure Works:
Cryoablation is a safe and effective procedure. The procedure uses sub-zero temperatures (Cryoablation) to reduce or eliminate excessive menstrual periods. The cold temperatures destroy the endometrium (your uterine lining), which is responsible for menstrual bleeding. When the endometrium is eliminated, there is less tissue to shed each period, and therefore, dramatically less or no menstrual bleeding.
Consultation/Assessment:
Every patient interested in Cryoablation will schedule a consultation appointment with one of our physicians. During the consult, you will be asked detailed medical history questions and discuss the actual procedure. Our physicians will determine if this procedure is right for you through a variety of diagnostic tests (including a consultation, endometrial biopsy, and blood work if indicated).
After reviewing the results of these tests, the physician will determine if you qualify as a candidate for the procedure.
Who is a candidate?
You may be a candidate for the Cryoablation if you experience one or more of the following:
- Flow that soaks through one or more sanitary pads or tampons every hour for several hours
- The need to use double sanitary protection to control your menstrual flow
- The need to change sanitary protection during the night
- Heavy menstrual flow that interferes with your regular lifestyle
- Constant pain in your lower abdomen during menstrual period
- Menstrual Period that lasts longer than seven days
- Irregular menstrual periods
Who is not a Candidate?
You may NOT be a candidate for the Cryoablation if you:
- Have not completed childbearing
- Have been diagnosed with uterine cancer
- Have an active urinary tract infection
- Have a pelvic inflammatory disease
- Have an IUD
- Have another type of uterine abnormality
- Have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder
Essure
Our practice offers Essure – a permanent birth control procedure that works with your body to create a natural barrier against pregnancy. This gentle procedure can be performed in less than an hour without general anesthesia. Talk to our doctors to see if Essure is right for you.
With Essure, you’ll never have to worry about unplanned pregnancy again. The Essure procedure is permanent and is not reversible. Therefore, you should be sure you do not want children in the future.
The Essure procedure does not require any cutting into the body. Instead, an Essure-trained doctor inserts small flexible micro-inserts™ through the body’s natural pathways (vagina, cervix, and uterus) and into your fallopian tubes.
The procedure can be performed in the comfort of a doctor’s office without general anesthesia, and most women resume their normal activities within one day.
During the 3 months following the procedure, your body and the micro-inserts work together to form a natural barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. During this period, you must continue using another form of birth control (other than an IUD or IUS).
Three months after the Essure procedure, a doctor will perform an Essure Confirmation Test to confirm that the tubes are fully blocked and that the women can rely on Essure for permanent birth control.
Unlike birth control pills, patches, rings, and some forms of IUDs, Essure does not contain hormones to interfere with your natural menstrual cycle. Your periods should more or less continue in their natural state.
Essure is covered by most insurance providers – depending on your specific insurance plan, payment may be as low as a simple co-pay. Always consult your insurance plan for specific coverage details.
