Arthritis can affect a child’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. Our treatment approach offers children and teens with arthritis and other inflammatory and autoimmune disorders to deal with pain and other issues, and achieve normalized growth and development.

As part of Hackensack Meridian Health Medical Group and Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, our team works closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, pain management specialists, social workers, child life therapists, ophthalmologists, gastroenterologists and other pediatric subspecialists to provide comprehensive care to all children with rheumatic diseases. Our active involvement in national and international research initiatives ensures that our patients have access to the latest advances in therapy.

Members of a Coordinated Team

Our doctors have worked and collaborated in research to improve the treatment and care of children with rheumatic diseases, and have published many articles and chapters, including the pediatric rheumatology textbook, “Arthritis in Children and Adolescents: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.”

Our physicians are dedicated to providing outstanding high quality, patient-centered care for all of our patients. We are actively involved in pediatric rheumatology research and education and are members and leaders of the North American pediatric rheumatology research network, Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA), which spans over 100 sites. Additionally, we are active supporters of the Arthritis Foundation (AF).

Our Services

Pediatric rheumatology services include:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of any pediatric patient suspected of having a rheumatic disease
  • Treatment, education and follow-up of all diagnosed patients
  • Infusion Center for intravenous administration of state-of-the-art medications
  • Inpatient consultations for pediatric rheumatology questions and problems
  • Pediatric rheumatology physicians available for emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Close collaborations with support services such as social work, psychology, pain management, child life/creative arts therapy and physical and occupational therapy to provide comprehensive patient support and care
  • Referrals and close collaborations with other pediatric subspecialties as needed
  • Age-appropriate support groups and parent support groups for patients and their families
  • Intra-articular corticosteroid injections
  • Access to national and international research studies to evaluate new medications and treatment outcomes for patients with JIA, uveitis, lupus, vasculitis and scleroderma
  • New PAIN day program: multi-disciplinary one-day program for education and networking for patients with fibromyalgia and other pain conditions
