Patients diagnosed with ALS require comprehensive care from a variety of specialists. At Hackensack Meridian Health, we bring together different specialists in one all-inclusive visit, helping to provide the best, most convenient health care experience for patients and families.

Hackensack Meridian Health collaborated with the ALS Association (ALSA), which allows us to exchange information and best care practices with the nation’s leading physician experts and clinics. This helps to ensure that people living with ALS in our region have access to specialized care. We are also fortunate to have the support of the Joan Dancy and PALS Foundation, who provides valuable feedback, education and in-servicing to enhance the care experience. They believe our program supports their mission, and thus are able to provide consultative support.

ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Amyotrophic means that the muscles have lost their nourishment. When this happens, they become smaller and weaker. Lateral means that the disease affects the sides of the spinal cord, where the nerves that nourish the muscles are located; and sclerosis means that the diseased part of the spinal cord develops hardened or scarred tissue in place of healthy nerves.
