Innovative Approaches to Orthopedic Surgery
Robotic and navigation technology offers advanced precision and accuracy for individual surgical needs and are particularly helpful in complex orthopedic surgical cases. Various technologies are used for hip, knee and spine procedures and can help physicians pinpoint areas to be removed or modified during surgery. Benefits of robotic and navigation technologies include accurate placement and alignment of implants, faster recovery and less pain for patients.
Knee Replacement
- The Mako System is a robotic-arm used in full and partial robotic knee replacement surgery. It utilizes a computed tomography (CT)-based 3D rendering of a patient’s orthopedic anatomy taken days before the surgery, which personalizes the surgical experience to specific anatomic details.
- The ROSA (Robotic Surgical Assistant) is used to preform total knee-replacement surgery. It uses X-rays, instead of a CT-scan, to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee for a personalized implant. This approach also limits the radiation exposure for patients during their scans. As a leader in innovation, two Hackensack Meridian Health physicians contributed to design of this technology and the hospital is a center of excellence for training other surgeons.
- The THINK Surgical Inc. TSolution One System is used during a robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery for the treatment of severe osteoarthritis. This system creates a personalized pre-operative plan which offers precise implant alignment for better fit.
Hip Replacement
- Intelijoint HIP System is an optical navigation system for total hip replacement and total hip revision surgeries. The system ensures correct implant size for equal leg length.
Spine Surgery
- Mazor Robotics Renaissance Spine Surgery is a state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive guidance system for spine surgery. It uses a CT-based 3D simulation of the patient’s spine, which is created before surgery to pre-plan the best surgical course.
