Organ Transplantation

As one of only a few certified transplant centers in New Jersey, we provide complete pre-transplant evaluation, surgical services, and post-operative care. Our board-certified physicians, together with a team of specially-trained transplant nurses and other healthcare professionals, are dedicated to providing you with advanced and compassionate care. Our transplant team members partner with patients, their families, and their referring physicians every step of the way, from transplant selection, to disease management before transplant, through the surgery and follow-up treatment.

Continuity of care and follow up are key parts of transplant services. We provide all patients with comprehensive, personalized education on monitoring their condition, administration of anti-rejection medications, how to recognize the signs of infection or rejection, and returning to a more normal lifestyle.

We perform adult kidney, pancreas, and simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplant surgeries, as well as pediatric kidney transplant surgeries, and provide all necessary medical and support services necessary to guide you through the transplantation process.

The demand for kidney transplantation continues to grow as the number of patients on the waiting list exceeds the number of available organs. Hackensack Meridian Health Transplant Program has developed an institute to help living donors and recipients make the connection. The Institute is established to promote living donation as the best transplant option for patients with chronic kidney disease who are either on or approaching dialysis. The Transplant Center offers a comprehensive kidney transplant program which includes an increasing number of innovative living donation techniques available at only a few of the world’s leading transplant centers.

Living donors and transplant candidates meet team members, talk with transplant recipients, and learn about kidney transplantation at a small informal education session.

Kidney Transplants

If you are living with progressive chronic kidney disease or have kidney failure, a transplant may be an option for you. Regardless of your age or the primary cause of your kidney failure, we will evaluate you to determine whether you are suitable for a transplant.

Kidney Transplant Process

Possible candidates are thoroughly evaluated and your case is then shared with a team of kidney and transplant specialists. They will carefully consider your individual medical details and personal preferences and make a recommendation about the best course of action for you. If it is determined that transplantation is your best option, you will be placed on a waiting list to receive a kidney from a living or deceased donor. The time you have already spent on dialysis will be considered and factored into where on the list you are placed.

Our procedures are designed to provide you with the best possible outcomes. We are constantly refining and adjusting them to take new developments into account. Our multidisciplinary team includes board-certified transplant surgeons, nephrologists, pathologists, radiologists, urologists, and gastroenterologists, along with pharmacists, social workers, transplant nurse coordinators, nurse practitioners, dietitians, tissue-typing specialists, and other dedicated support staff.

Some types of insurance require a referral. Our team will help determine if your insurance requires a referral, and if so, contact your primary physician’s office to obtain one. If your insurance does not require a referral, you, a family member, or your physician’s office may make an appointment directly with us.
